For anyone who doesn’t know what we’re talking about here, there you go: https://www.moralmachine.net/ That my friends, is the moral machine. A platform made to gather human perspectives on moral decisions made by AI. In this case, self-driving cars.
To cut it quick, you get sets of moral dilemmas where an autonomous vehicle must choose between two negative outcomes, and you of course must act as said vehicle, and determine which outcome you see as more acceptable.
Exciting right?! That’s what I thought when I stumbled upon this piece of a headache. Well of course I’ll tell you why I started whining at the very start of a small blogpost. So, if you are a person who likes to dig into yourself a lot and uncover hidden biases, you’re in the right place. You see, once you finish your choices you get your results:
I guess you can have a look but depending on where your morals rely they can vary a lot between rounds.
But even before the results you’re called to make decisions on “saving” or “sacrificing” certain lives against others. That can really make you face your internal biases like a slap. And don’t try to be sneaky, I did.
I guess other people also, relied on the pedestrian signal to determine the “sacrificed” individuals but slowly this option fades away. (BTW dogs certainly cannot read pedestrian signals to be responsible for their actions).
And in the end, you stand there.. deciding which lives are worth more than others.
Will you choose based on the crowd’s number? Status? Gender? Health? Age? Whether they belong in a minority?
Or maybe you always choose a scenario with the least possible intervention. But still, what does that say about you? Is it fear of responsibility? What if the fear of responsibility coming from individuals with high moral values allows people who are not as reflective, or who are less compassionate to lead the world’s decisions?
This is just a moral game, but thinking about it, it can serve as a very powerful tool for you as a “player”, where you can observe yourself from a view you might not be used to seeing.
I highly suggest it.
Have fun playing!
